Winner: Joan Freeman
Over the course of the last ten years, Joan Freeman's name has become synonymous with support, empathy and understanding.
Pieta House, the organisation she established in 2006, galvanised the Irish public, and its Darkness into Light event reminded us that a rarely discussed and desperately misunderstood topic requires our comprehension and compassion.
Now focussing on child and adolescent mental health in Ireland, Joan is pushing for legislation which would make it illegal for children to be admitted into adult psychiatric units in Ireland.
Renowned for her verve and vigour when it comes to mental health issues in Ireland, Senator Freeman is our deserving winner for the Special Recognition Award.
